Rhodonite The Red Gemstone

Faceted And Cabachon Rhodonite Gems

The origin of the name Rhodonite is related to the Greek word 'rhodon' which means rose. It is the pink to red color of rhodonite gems that relates it to the rose flower. The manganese content within the rhodonite is what gives the pink to red color to the gemstone. At times you will find a brownish red color on some rhodonite stones. This color is brought about by oxidation on the surface of the gemstone. The oxidation of rhodonite takes place naturally and no external treatment is involved.

The appearance of rhodonite gemstones can vary but the stone would generally fall in three broad categories. The first is an opaque whitish red or whitish pink stone, very often such rhodonite gemstones show black veins on the stone. These black veins are composed mainly of manganese, showing up as black strings when it oxidises. Rhodonite gems of this variety of are most often cut in cabachon form without facets. You can see such gems in round and oval shapes. Custom cut rhodonite gemstones can ofcourse be produced in square, drop shape or any other shape that you desire. Many people notice the similarity of the gem and black veins with another gem, turquoise. However you should know that rhodonite and turquoise are not the same, so the name pink turquoise is a confusing term coined largely by gem traders. If you do come across turquoise in colors like green, red and purple it would be dyed material or not turquoise at all. Much of the rhodonite of this variety is carved into various objects, big pieces are sometimes made into small table tops to adorn the house.

Besides being confused with turquoise because of the misleading name 'pink turquoise', rhodonite is sometimes thought to be the same as rhodocrosite. You should know that rhodonite and rhodocrosite are two different stones, rhodonite is much harder than rhodocrosite.

The second category in which you could find rhodonite stones is red in color and transluscent. Such material will show clearly visible fissures and inclusions. Once again the popular way to cut such rhodonite stones is as round or oval cabachon pieces. These gems hold much interest for gemstone collectors and make a good addition to any gem collection. Though fairly large rhodnite gems of this variety can be found, do not expect to find eye clean quality especially for sizes that are larger than 6mm.

The third variety of rhodonite gemstones is the stone in crystal form. Though you will not find a glass type of transparency and clarity even in this category of rhodonite, the gems look gorgeous and are quite rare. Rhodonite crystals go beyond cabachon cuts, nice faceted rhodonite finds it's way into the gems and jewelry industry. Price wise you would end up paying the most for such crystal forms of rhodonite. Not many gem and jewelry lovers are aware of rhodonite, this is one of the main reasons for the moderated price.

There is an interesting folklore about the rhodonite stone and we would like to share it with you. Local people residing in a small Russian village named Maloe Sidelnikovo called it 'Orletz'. This was during the 18th century and the word translated into the Russian language meant 'Eagle Stone'. Folklore says that big eagles (birds) living on the mountains near the site where rhodonite was found, liked to pick up small pieces of the stone and place it in their nests! This is why the name 'eagle stone' was given to rhodonite. It was also the beginning of the belief that putting a piece of rhodonite in a baby's cradle, would make the baby as strong as the mountain eagle.

The durability of rhodonite makes an interesting topic to discuss. The Mohs scale of hardness gives the stone a rating of 5.5 to 6.5 which is about average. The interesting thing is that the 'best' quality of rhodonite which happens to the be the near transparent crystal type, is a bit less durable as compared to the opaque pinkish variety with black manganese veins. It is highly recommended that you do not get the gemstone hit against hard objects or surface. When cleaning this gem avoid harsh chemicals and ultrasonic jewelry cleaners. Wiping the rhodonite stone (or jewel) with a soft damp cloth is a good way to clean the stone. Jewelers sometimes finish the cleaning process by dabbing a small amount of olive oil on the surface of the stone. This especially for the cabachon cut rhodonite, gives a nice gloss to the stone. This is one gemstone that should not be left soaking in water. A quick water rinse would be fine but make sure that you do not, leave a rhodonite stone in water for more than 5 to 10 seconds.

Having established itself as the world's leading online custom jewelry provider, Kaisilver now extends it's merchandise line to include gems. While there is no shortage of gem stones in the global market, reliable sources for the retail buyer requirements are not many. Most retail gem dealers work with limited inventories, this reduces buyer options. Kaisilver with it's wide network of gemstone mining and manufacturing resources, is the best source for gems of all types, shapes, sizes and cuts. How To Order?

The process to order gems and custom jewelry at Kaisilver is similar. We do not expect you to make a rush purchase. We do wish that you take the time to discuss your requirements with our experts. They will be in a position to provide constructive suggestions that will guide you to make well informed buying decisions. Email all your requirements to sales@kaisilver.com provide as much inputs as possible to help us make relevant suggestions. For example if you are keen on getting a green gemstone but, are not particular about it being an emerald mention this in your email. Our gem experts might suggest a green tourmaline or even a peridot instead of an emerald. This suggestion would reduce our profit margins but will give you a gem that, is much cheaper and even more durable as compared to an emerald. When it comes to payments we offer some very suitable options. Paypal is the preferred form of payment, it is fair to the buyer and seller. The buyer when using paypal never needs to reveal credit card of bank information to the seller. We also accept direct bank transfers but prefer to do this on a case by case basis. When it comes to online transactions these days, both buyer and seller are afraid of frauds. It is quite possible that you do not feel comfortable working with us at Kaisilver. We sometimes feel a little uncomfortable with certain transactions too and prefer to keep away from them. There have always been fears of processing payments through Western Union money transfers. With the latest fraud reports, fake sellers and even fake buyers have been pulling off many online frauds using this mode of payment. At the same time we do understand that armed forces from the U.S who are stationed in various global positions sometimes have no other mode of payment besides Western Union. We therefore accept this mode of payment but at the same time, request you to avoid this mode if you do not feel comfortable using it. Shipping is done through FEDEX and you can expect a production lead time of around 4 to 5 weeks from the date of order confirmation and receipt of payment. Every jewel is fully custom made and requires the complete attention and concentration of highly skilled craftsmen. When it comes to gems, we could provide faster lead times and this can be discussed for each specific order.
